Micropiles

Project

The project consisted of the restoration of a fire damaged historic elementary school.

The Problem

A brick facade was all that remained of the historic school that originally opened in 1906. The restoration of the school required the installation of new heavily loaded foundations adjacent to the existing facade footings, raising concerns about their sensitivity to vibration and settlement.

Earth Tech Solution

Earth Tech proposed to support the new foundations on Micropiles to address vibration and settlement concerns. Nominal 5-1/2 inch diameter drilled in place Micropiles were installed into a limestone bearing stratum located between 40 to 45 feet deep. The piles were designed for a 50-ton compression load and capacity was confirmed using a rapid load test.
